Genesis 32:10

Listen to this article

“I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.”

Firstly:Jacob acknowledges his unworthiness before God by saying, “I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant.” Here, Jacob recognises that God has been gracious and faithful to him throughout his life. He acknowledges that he does not deserve the blessings and favour that God has bestowed upon him. This humble confession reveals Jacob’s recognition of God’s sovereignty and his own dependence on God’s mercy.

Next, Jacob recounts his journey from his homeland to the present situation, saying, “for with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two bands.” This statement refers to Jacob’s initial journey when he left his father’s house with nothing but a staff in his hand. Now, as he is about to face Esau, he acknowledges that he has been blessed and has become prosperous, represented by the “two bands” or two camps that he now possesses. This highlights the transformation and increase that God has brought about in Jacob’s life over the years.

Jacob’s prayer in this verse demonstrates a genuine humility and gratitude towards God. He recognises his own insignificance and acknowledges that everything he has achieved is a result of God’s mercy and faithfulness. Despite his past mistakes and deceptions, Jacob humbles himself before God and expresses his gratitude for the blessings he has received.

This verse reminds us of the importance of humility and gratitude in our relationship with God. It teaches us to acknowledge God’s faithfulness and recognise that all blessings come from Him. Like Jacob, we should approach God with a humble heart, acknowledging our unworthiness and expressing gratitude for His mercy and blessings in our lives.

By studying this verse, we can learn valuable lessons about recognising God’s faithfulness, expressing gratitude, and humbling ourselves before Him.
