Genesis 35:23

Listen to this article

The sonnes of Leah: Reuben Iacobs first borne, and Simeon, and Leui, and Iudah, and Issachar, and Zebulun. Genesis 35:23 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the genealogical record recorded in Genesis 35 and lists the six sons born to Leah: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. While the verse itself names only Leah’s children, it is situated within the broader genealogy of Jacob’s twelve sons, each of whom would become the head of one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

The surrounding context is Jacob’s return to Bethel, the place where God had previously appeared to him and confirmed the covenant. As Jacob and his household journeyed to Bethel, they removed foreign gods and performed a ritual cleansing, preparing themselves to worship the one true God.

In the preceding verse (Genesis 35:22) we read of Reuben’s serious breach of family boundaries when he lay with Bilhah, Jacob’s concubine, an act that brought consequences for him. It is also important to note that the tragic incident involving Jacob’s daughter Dinah and the subsequent revenge by Simeon and Levi occurs in Genesis 34, not in Genesis 35:22, and Jacob later rebukes their violent response.

The order in which the sons are listed reflects their birth order, with Reuben first as Jacob’s firstborn, followed by Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. Judah’s name stands out because his descendants would become the dominant tribe in Israel, producing the royal line that includes King David and ultimately Jesus Christ. This foreshadowing gives the verse lasting spiritual significance within the larger biblical narrative.

The genealogical record is crucial because it establishes the lineage through which God’s covenant promises would be fulfilled. God chose Jacob and his descendants to become a great nation, and through the twelve tribes each with its unique role, the blessings promised to Abraham would extend to all families of the earth. The listing of these names underscores the unfolding of God’s redemptive plan for humanity.

Thus Genesis 35:23 offers a concise glimpse into the genealogy of Jacob’s sons from Leah, highlights the future importance of Judah’s line, and sets the stage for the continued story of God’s chosen people, Israel.
