Genesis 36:28

The children of Dishan are these; Uz, and Aran.

Genesis 36:28 (KJV)

Genesis 36 records the family line of Esau, also called Edom. This chapter lists his wives, sons, grandsons, and the chiefs of the land. Verse 28 names Dishan as a son of Seir the Horite, and it gives the names of two of Dishan’s children: Uz and Aran. The same record appears in 1 Chronicles 1:42, confirming the accuracy of this family list.

The names Uz and Aran may seem small, but they show that God cares about every person. The Bible often preserves genealogies to trace the origins of nations and to show that history is not random. Dishan belonged to the Horites, a people living in the land of Edom before Esau’s descendants settled there. The mention of Uz also connects to the land of Uz, which Lamentations 4:21 associates with Edom. Some think this is the same land where Job lived, but the Bible does not make that link certain.

This genealogy reminds us of God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants would become many nations. Although Esau was not the chosen heir of the covenant, God still blessed his family with growth and a lasting heritage. The parallel in 1 Chronicles 1:42 confirms that these names were carefully remembered. This shows that God’s care extends beyond the main line of promise to all branches of Abraham’s family.

Readers can learn that every life matters to God. Even people who appear only once in Scripture are part of His plan. We may feel unknown or unimportant, but God sees us and records our days. This should encourage us to trust that our lives also contribute to His greater purpose.

The brief record of Uz and Aran invites us to explore the wider story of Scripture. Each name points to a real person and a real history. As we read such passages, we grow in wonder at God’s detailed care for all people and His faithful work through every generation.
