Genesis 36:7

For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.

Genesis 36:7 (KJV)

Genesis 36 records the family line of Esau, also called Edom. Verse 7 appears inside this genealogy and explains why Esau’s household separated from Jacob’s. Both families had grown large in Canaan, where they lived as foreigners.

The verse says their riches were too great for them to dwell together. The land could not support both groups because of their many cattle. This was not a sign of God’s anger but a practical need for room to graze their livestock. The word “strangers” reminds us that Canaan was not their permanent home. Their wealth, though a blessing, created a challenge that required a solution.

This separation mirrors an earlier parting. Abraham and Lot also divided because their possessions were too many for the land (Genesis 13:6). In both cases, abundance created a need to move. God used these practical circumstances to guide families to the places He had prepared. This pattern shows that even blessings require careful stewardship.

Wealth and blessing can bring challenges. When resources become strained, wise decisions may require change. Believers can trust that God provides and directs even through such difficulties. Earthly riches are temporary, but God’s care remains constant. We should seek wisdom when abundance becomes a burden.

This verse shows God’s faithfulness to His promise that Esau would become a nation (Genesis 27:39-40). It also reminds us that material prosperity is not the highest good. Our true security rests in God, who watches over His people in every season.
