Genesis 36:11

Listen to this article

“And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.”

Genesis 36:11 is a part of the genealogy of Esau, also known as Edom. This chapter provides a detailed account of the descendants of Esau, who became the father of the Edomites. The verse specifically focuses on the sons of Esau’s firstborn son, Eliphaz:

Eliphaz:Eliphaz was the firstborn son of Esau and Adah, Esau’s wife. Eliphaz played a significant role in the genealogy of the Edomites. The verse mentions his sons:

  • Teman:Teman was the first son of Eliphaz. The name “Teman” can also refer to a region in Edom associated with this son. In the Bible, Job had a friend named Eliphaz the Temanite, possibly descended from this line.
  • Omar:Omar was another son of Eliphaz, and not much else is known about him from the biblical text.
  • Zepho:Zepho was one of the sons of Eliphaz. Similar to Omar, there is limited information available about Zepho in the Bible.
  • Gatam:Gatam was another son of Eliphaz, and like Omar and Zepho, not much detail is given about him in the biblical narrative.
  • Kenaz:Kenaz was the final son mentioned in this verse. Again, the Bible does not provide extensive information about him.

This verse serves to establish the lineage and descendants of Eliphaz, which is significant in tracing the history of the Edomites. It highlights the prominence of Eliphaz as the firstborn of Esau and demonstrates the multiplication of the Edomite people.

Overall, this verse contributes to the larger narrative of the descendants of Esau and provides insights into the development of the nation of Edom. While the specific details of Eliphaz’s sons are relatively sparse, this verse helps to establish their names and their place within the lineage of the Edomites.
