Listen to this article

And these are the sonnes of Reuel Esaus sonne: duke Nahath, duke Zerah, duke Shammah, duke Mizzah. These are the dukes that came of Reuel, in the land of Edom: these are the sonnes of Bashemath, Esaus wife. Genesis 36:17 (KJV)

Genesis 36 chapter provides a genealogy of Esau who also known as Edom. It lists the descendants of Esau through his various wives and concubines. The passage records that the sons of Reuel the son of Esau are named as duke Nahath, duke Zerah, duke Shammah, duke Mizzah. These are the dukes that came in the land of Edom. The text also states that these are the sons of Bashemath Esau’s wife. The genealogy therefore lists the dukes of Reuel and the sons of Bashemath together. The verse shows that the dukes came in the land of Edom and that the family line continued through both the sons of Reuel and the sons of Bashemath. The chapter provides a clear list of the dukes and the sons, and it emphasizes the connection of each name to the land of Edom. The structure of the genealogy is simple: it names each duke, it identifies the land, and it notes the maternal line of Bashemath. This pattern of naming dukes and linking them to the land of Edom appears throughout the chapter. The study of this verse reminds the reader that the genealogical record in Genesis 36 serves to preserve the memory of Esau’s descendants, their titles as dukes, and their settlement in Edom. The verse therefore functions as a concise summary of the broader genealogical list that follows in the chapter, reinforcing the importance of lineage, land, and family ties in the biblical narrative.
