Genesis 41:39

Listen to this article

And Pharaoh said vnto Ioseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreete and wise, as thou art: Genesis 41:39 (KJV)

Context: In this verse we find Joseph, who had been sold into slavery by his brothers and was later serving in Egypt. Through a series of events he interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams, revealing seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. Impressed by Joseph’s wisdom and discernment, Pharaoh acknowledges the role of God in Joseph’s life and recognises his unique abilities.

God’s Guidance: Pharaoh acknowledges that it is God who has shown Joseph the interpretation of the dreams. This highlights the truth that God is the source of wisdom and insight. Throughout Scripture we see God granting wisdom to those who seek Him and trust in Him. Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams was a gift from God and demonstrated His providential care over Joseph’s life.

Discretion and Wisdom: Pharaoh describes Joseph as “none so discreet and wise as thou art.” Joseph’s wisdom and discretion were evident not only in the dream interpretation but also in his practical plan to prepare Egypt for the forthcoming famine. This reminds us that God’s wisdom extends to everyday matters, enabling sound judgment and appropriate action.

God’s Sovereignty: Pharaoh’s commendation of Joseph is a testimony to God’s sovereignty. It was God who orchestrated the events that brought Joseph from slave to trusted advisor. Through Joseph’s position of authority, God would ultimately save Egypt and also Joseph’s own family during the severe famine.

Application: As we reflect on this verse, several practical lessons emerge. First, we should recognise that God is the source of all wisdom; when we seek His guidance and rely on Him, He provides the discernment needed for wise decisions. Second, we are called to develop qualities such as discretion and wisdom, which positively impact our relationships and responsibilities. Finally, we must trust in God’s sovereignty, believing that even difficult circumstances can be used by Him to fulfill His purposes and bring about good.

In conclusion, Genesis 41:39 reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance, cultivating wisdom and discretion, and trusting in His sovereign plan. It encourages us to rely on God’s wisdom in every aspect of life and to recognise His hand in our journey, just as Pharaoh recognised the wisdom and guidance God had bestowed upon Joseph.
