And in the seuen plenteous yeres the earth brought forth by handfuls. Genesis 41:47 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of Joseph’s rise to power in Egypt. Prior to it, Pharaoh had a troubling dream that none of his wise men could interpret. Joseph, who was then in prison, was summoned, interpreted the dream correctly, and explained that it foretold seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine.

Genesis 41:47 specifically focuses on the beginning of the seven years of plenty. It records that the earth brought forth abundantly, the crops and produce being gathered by handfuls, and that Joseph gathered as much grain as possible, even unto the stones, storing it for the years of famine. The verse highlights the stark contrast between the abundance of the plentiful years and the scarcity that would follow.

Divine Providence: The fact that the land produced such a surplus during the seven years of plenty demonstrates God’s providence and blessing. It reminds us that God is the ultimate provider and sustainer of all things, and that this abundance is a gift from Him, not merely the result of human effort.

Cycles of Life: The pattern of seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine illustrates the cyclical nature of life. Seasons of abundance and scarcity are part of human existence, and the passage emphasizes the importance of being prepared and managing resources wisely during times of plenty in order to endure periods of scarcity.

Joseph’s Wisdom: This verse also reflects Joseph’s wisdom and leadership. After interpreting Pharaoh’s dream, he advised the appointment of a discerning man to oversee the storage and management of food. Joseph’s foresight and administrative skill were crucial to Egypt’s survival during the subsequent famine.

Lessons for Us: While the verse describes a specific ancient event, it holds timeless lessons. It calls us to stewardship and planning for the future, urging us to use times of abundance to build material and spiritual reserves so that we can withstand future challenges.

In summary, Genesis 41:47 highlights the onset of the seven years of plenty when the land produced abundantly and Joseph stored grain. It teaches about God’s providence, the cyclical nature of life, the value of wise leadership, and the need for diligent stewardship and preparation.
