Genesis 42:36
And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.
Genesis 42:36 (KJV)
Context
This verse comes from the account of Joseph’s brothers traveling to Egypt to buy grain during a severe famine. Joseph, whom his brothers had sold into slavery, now held a high position in Egypt and controlled the distribution of food. He tested his brothers by accusing them of being spies and kept Simeon as a hostage until they would bring their youngest brother, Benjamin, to prove their honesty.
Meaning
Jacob, their father, responds with deep grief. He believes Joseph is dead, and now Simeon is detained in Egypt. The demand to take Benjamin, his only remaining son from Rachel, feels unbearable. His words, “Me have ye bereaved of my children”, show that he suspects his sons may have harmed Joseph. The phrase “all these things are against me” reveals his despair. He sees every event as hostile, and he cannot see any purpose in his suffering.
Biblical connections
Jacob’s perspective is limited. He does not know that Joseph is alive and that God is using these events to preserve the family. Later, in Genesis 45, Joseph reveals himself and explains that God sent him ahead to save lives. This connection shows that what seems to be against us may be part of a larger plan. Romans 8:28 also teaches that God works all things for good for those who love Him, though we may not understand at the time.
Application
When circumstances pile up and hope fades, we may feel like Jacob. We may think that God has forgotten us. This verse encourages us to remember that our view is small. We cannot see the whole picture, but God can. We can bring our honest grief to Him, as Jacob did, and still choose to trust His faithfulness.
Reflection
Jacob’s story ends with restoration and joy. His despair was not the final word. In our own trials, we can hold on to the hope that God is at work, even when we cannot see it. He is sovereign over every circumstance, and His purposes will stand.
