Genesis 44:25

And our father said, Goe againe, and buy vs a little food. Genesis 44:25 (KJV)

This verse is part of the story of Joseph and his brothers in the book of Genesis. Joseph, who had been sold into slavery by his brothers, had risen to a position of power in Egypt. A severe famine struck the land, and the brothers traveled to Egypt to purchase food for their family. In Genesis 44, Joseph tested his brothers to determine whether they had truly changed and repented for their past actions. He orchestrated a series of events in which he falsely accused his younger brother Benjamin of stealing a silver cup. As a result, Benjamin was detained in Egypt while the other brothers returned to their father, Jacob, in Canaan.

Judah’s plea to the Egyptian official includes the words, “And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.” Judah recounts that Jacob had instructed them to go back and buy additional provisions during the famine. When the brothers returned without Benjamin, Jacob was deeply distressed, and he again urged them to go back and obtain more food. This verse highlights the desperation and concern of the brothers for their father and their commitment to fulfill his wishes, even at personal risk.

In a broader sense, the passage emphasizes the importance of obedience and responsibility within the family unit. Jacob, as the father, gave clear instructions, and his sons were determined to carry them out despite the challenges they faced. Their actions demonstrate love and concern for their father’s well‑being. The narrative can serve as a reminder to honor and respect our parents’ instructions and desires. It encourages believers to fulfill their responsibilities and obligations toward their families, showing care and concern for their needs. Overall, the account underscores the brothers’ commitment to their father’s wishes, reflecting the values of obedience, responsibility, and familial love.
