Listen to this article

These are the sonnes of Bilhah, which Laban gaue vnto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these vnto Iacob: all the soules were seuen. Genesis 46:25 (KJV)

These are the sons of Bilhah, who was a maidservant of Rachel, one of Jacob’s wives. Bilhah gave birth to two sons for Jacob—Dan and Naphtali as recorded earlier in Genesis 30:5‑6. In Genesis 46:25 the text notes that “all the souls were seven,” indicating the total number of individuals who descended from Bilhah, including her two sons and their families. This verse is situated within the larger narrative of Jacob’s journey to Egypt. During a severe famine in Canaan, God directed Jacob, also called Israel, to go down to Egypt. He gathered his entire household and set out for the land of the Pharaoh.

The phrase “all the souls were seven” emphasizes the inclusion of Bilhah’s descendants in the count of Jacob’s family members who migrated to Egypt. It underscores that God’s covenant and blessing extended to every branch of Jacob’s offspring, regardless of the mother’s status or the complexities of the family dynamics. The verse reminds readers that God’s plan is not limited by societal norms or human limitations; He works through imperfect and diverse family relationships to fulfill His purposes.

Overall, Genesis 46:25 offers a glimpse into the varied makeup of Jacob’s household and testifies to the inclusiveness of God’s plan. It highlights the faithfulness of God in keeping His promises to the descendants of Jacob and demonstrates His ability to work through various circumstances to accomplish His divine purposes.
