Genesis 47:7

Listen to this article

“And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.”

This verse occurs in the context of Joseph’s rise to prominence in Egypt.

After being sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph had experienced many trials and tribulations, including being falsely accused and imprisoned.

However, through divine intervention and his God-given ability to interpret dreams, Joseph was ultimately elevated to a position of great authority under Pharaoh.

In Genesis 47, we find Joseph overseeing the distribution of food during a severe famine in the land.

Joseph’s family, including his father Jacob (also known as Israel), had come to Egypt seeking food and sustenance.

When Jacob arrived, Joseph presented him before Pharaoh.

What stands out in this verse is the action of Jacob blessing Pharaoh.

It is significant because typically, blessings were imparted by someone of greater spiritual or social standing onto someone of lesser standing.

However, in this instance, Jacob, the patriarch and spiritual leader of his family, blesses Pharaoh, who was a powerful ruler.

This act of Jacob blessing Pharaoh highlights the reverence and honour that Jacob gave to Pharaoh as the leader of Egypt.

It also demonstrates Jacob’s gratitude and appreciation for the provision and hospitality extended to him and his family in their time of need.

Additionally, it symbolises the recognition of Pharaoh’s position of authority and the acknowledgment that all blessings ultimately come from God.

Moreover, this verse also reflects the fulfilment of God’s promise to Jacob (Genesis 46:3-4) that He would make a great nation out of him in Egypt.

The interaction between Jacob and Pharaoh emphasises the divine plan unfolding as Joseph, through whom the promise was being realised, presents his father before the ruler of Egypt.

In a broader context, this verse reminds us of the importance of showing respect and gratitude to those in positions of authority or those who have shown kindness to us.

Jacob’s blessing of Pharaoh serves as a model for acknowledging and honouring those who have provided assistance or support in our lives.

In summary:Genesis 47:7 portrays the respectful interaction between Jacob and Pharaoh. Jacob, as the patriarch of his family, blesses Pharaoh, highlighting his appreciation, gratitude, and recognition of Pharaoh’s authority. It also signifies the fulfilment of God’s promise to Jacob and teaches us about the importance of honouring those who have helped us.
