Genesis 49:14

Listen to this article

Issachar is a strong asse, couching downe betweene two burdens. Genesis 49:14 (KJV)

Jacob’s blessing to his twelve sons is recorded just before his death, and each son receives a distinct prophecy concerning his future. In this passage Jacob addresses his ninth son, Issachar, who was born to Leah. The name “Issachar” means “reward” or “wages,” a detail that adds depth to the blessing.

The phrase “a strong ass” uses the biblical image of a donkey. In ancient times a donkey was valued for its ability to carry heavy loads and for its endurance. By comparing Issachar to a strong donkey, Jacob highlights Issachar’s physical strength and capacity to endure demanding tasks.

The expression “couching down between two burdens” and the addition “and a diligent servant” together convey a picture of diligent labor and faithful service. The imagery suggests that Issachar would willingly bear heavy responsibilities, working hard and faithfully in the service of others. Some readers understand the “two burdens” as indicating a position of subjugation or tribute, while others see it simply as a reference to the weight of the tasks he would undertake.

Taken together, Jacob’s words portray Issachar as a hardworking, resilient individual who would serve faithfully and bear the demands placed upon him. The blessing emphasizes both the strength that enables him to carry burdens and the dedication that drives his service. The dual image of strength and burden reminds readers that God’s blessings often combine ability with responsibility. Issachar’s destiny, as described, includes both the capacity to endure and the reality of serving under authority.

Overall, this verse portrays Issachar as a hardworking and resilient individual who would carry burdens in service to others. As with all biblical passages, interpretations can vary, and further insight may be gained by consulting additional translations, commentaries, and related scriptural references.
