Genesis 8:6

Posted on 6 July 2023
Listen to this article

And it came to passe at the end of forty dayes, that Noah opened the window of the Arke which he had made. Genesis 8:6 (KJV)

Context: Genesis 8 records the account of Noah and the great flood. After the floodwaters covered the earth for 150 days, God remembered Noah and caused the waters to recede. In verse 6 we find Noah taking a significant step as he opens the window of the ark.

Symbolism of the Ark:

The ark itself carries symbolic significance in biblical narratives. It represents God’s provision and protection, serving as a means of salvation for Noah, his family, and the animals. In this context the ark is a place of safety and refuge during the flood.

The Forty Days:

Genesis 8:6 mentions that it was “at the end of forty days” that Noah opened the window of the ark. The period of forty days carries biblical significance throughout Scripture, often signifying a time of testing, trial, or preparation. For example, Moses spent forty days on Mount Sinai (Exodus 24:18) and Jesus fasted forty days in the wilderness (Matthew 4:2). In Noah’s case the forty days marked the time after the waters began to recede, following the initial 150 days of flood.

Noah’s Action:

Opening the window of the ark is an act of faith and anticipation. After spending an extended period in the confined space of the ark, Noah opens the window to observe the condition of the earth. His curiosity and desire to gain insight into the state of the world outside demonstrate his active trust in God’s plan.

God’s Timing:

The phrase “at the end of forty days” indicates that God appointed a specific period for the floodwaters to recede. Noah’s action of opening the window aligned with God’s timing, showing that he was attentive to God’s leading and obedient to His instructions.

Lessons for Us:

Patience and Trust: The account of Noah teaches the importance of patience and trust in God’s timing. Noah patiently waited inside the ark, relying on God’s promise to deliver him. Likewise, we should trust God’s timing in our own lives and patiently wait for His plans to unfold.

Obedience: Noah’s act of opening the window demonstrates obedience to God’s commands, even when the reasons are not fully understood. It reminds us to seek to obey God faithfully, knowing that His wisdom surpasses our own.

Seeking God’s Guidance: Noah’s curiosity highlights the need to seek God’s guidance and direction. Just as he opened the window to gain insight, we should approach God in prayer and study His Word to obtain understanding and wisdom.

In conclusion, Genesis 8:6 captures a pivotal moment in Noah’s life as he opens the window of the ark after forty days. This act exemplifies obedience, patience, and trust in God’s timing, and it encourages us to be patient, obedient, and to seek God’s guidance in our own journeys.
