Genesis Chapter 19

Summery

Genesis 19 narrates the dramatic account of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Two angels arrive in Sodom and are welcomed by Lot, Abraham’s nephew. However, the men of the city, both young and old, gather around Lot’s house, demanding to have sexual relations with the visitors. Lot, in an attempt to protect the angels, offers his virgin daughters instead, but the men persist. The angels intervene, blinding the men outside and urging Lot to gather his family and flee from the impending destruction.

As dawn breaks, the angels urge Lot to hasten his departure, but he hesitates. Eventually, the angels grab his hand and lead him, his wife, and his two daughters out of the city, warning them not to look back. As the family flees, God showers sulfur and fire upon Sodom and Gomorrah, annihilating the wicked cities and their inhabitants.

Lot’s wife disobeys the command not to look back and is transformed into a pillar of salt. Lot and his daughters continue their journey, fearing to remain in the nearby cities. They settle in a cave in the mountains. The older daughter, concerned about their lineage, devises a plan to inebriate their father and have sexual relations with him, which results in her becoming pregnant. The younger daughter follows suit, and both bear sons.
