Habakkuk 1:6

Listen to this article

“For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces that are not theirs.”

Historical Context:Habakkuk was a prophet who lived during the final years of the Kingdom of Judah before the Babylonian exile. He witnessed the increasing wickedness and injustice among his own people. In this verse, Habakkuk receives a revelation from God regarding His plan to raise up the Chaldeans (Babylonians) as an instrument of judgment against Judah.

God’s Sovereignty:Habakkuk begins his book with a complaint to God about the wickedness and violence he sees in Judah. In response, God reveals His sovereign plan to raise up the Chaldeans as an instrument of judgment. This verse demonstrates that God is in control of human history and uses even the ungodly nations to accomplish His purposes.

The Chaldeans:The Chaldeans were a fierce and brutal people who would conquer many nations, including Judah. God describes them as “bitter and hasty,” indicating their ferocity and swift military conquests. Their arrival would be devastating for the people of Judah, as they would seize lands and possessions that did not belong to them.

Judgment and Consequences:God’s decision to raise up the Chaldeans reflects His response to the wickedness of the people of Judah. The verse indicates that the Chaldeans would march through the land, taking possession of territories that were not rightfully theirs. This judgment would bring suffering and hardship upon the people of Judah.

Trusting God’s Wisdom:Although the message of judgment was difficult for Habakkuk to accept, he eventually comes to understand that God’s ways are higher than human understanding. In the subsequent verses, Habakkuk engages in a dialogue with God, seeking to understand His purposes and seeking comfort amidst the impending judgment.

  • Remember to study the entire book of Habakkuk to gain a complete understanding of its context, message, and the dialogue between Habakkuk and God.
