Haggai 1:1

Listen to this article

“In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,”

Context:The book of Haggai is one of the minor prophets in the Old Testament. It was written during the time when the Israelites had returned from their exile in Babylon and were rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem. The people had initially shown enthusiasm for the task but had become discouraged and neglected the work. Haggai was sent by God to encourage the people and urge them to prioritize the rebuilding of the temple.

Historical context:The events described in Haggai 1:1 took place “in the second year of Darius the king.” Darius the Great was the ruler of Persia from 522 to 486 BC. The Israelites had been allowed to return to their land and begin rebuilding the temple under the decree of Cyrus, the previous Persian king.

The recipients:Haggai received a message from the Lord to deliver to two key individuals: Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, and Joshua, the high priest. Zerubbabel was from the line of David and played a significant role in the restoration of Jerusalem and the temple. Joshua served as the high priest and was responsible for the religious leadership of the people.

The message:Haggai brought a word from the Lord to Zerubbabel and Joshua, addressing the issue of the neglected temple. The people had become focused on their personal pursuits and had left the temple in ruins. God’s message through Haggai was meant to remind and challenge them to resume the construction of the temple and put God’s house as a priority.

Application:

  • Prioritize God’s work:The people of Judah were neglecting the rebuilding of the temple because they were more concerned with their own houses and personal pursuits. The message of Haggai reminds us to prioritize God’s work in our lives. It is easy to get caught up in our own ambitions and desires, but we should always make room for God and His purposes.
  • Seek God’s direction:Haggai received the word of the Lord, indicating the importance of seeking God’s guidance in our lives. When we face challenges or feel discouraged, we should turn to God and His Word for direction and encouragement. God speaks to His people, and we need to be attentive to His voice.
  • Obey God’s commands:Haggai faithfully delivered God’s message to Zerubbabel and Joshua. In the same way, we should be obedient to God’s commands. When God speaks to us through His Word or through His Spirit, we should respond in obedience. True worship involves both hearing God’s Word and acting upon it.

Haggai 1:1 sets the stage for the message that Haggai delivered to Zerubbabel and Joshua regarding the neglected temple. It reminds us to prioritize God’s work, seek His direction, and obey His commands. Just as the Israelites were called to rebuild the temple, we are called to be active participants in God’s kingdom-building work in our lives and communities.
