Haggai 1:12

Posted on 18 May at 14:52
Listen to this article

“Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD.”

Context:The book of Haggai is one of the minor prophets in the Old Testament. Haggai was a prophet who delivered messages from God to the Israelites who had returned from exile in Babylon. The people had initially started rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem after their return but had become complacent and neglected the work due to opposition and their own priorities. Haggai was sent by God to encourage them to prioritise the reconstruction of the temple.

Obedience to God’s Voice:The verse begins by mentioning Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the remnant of the people. It highlights their obedience to the voice of the Lord their God. Obedience is a fundamental aspect of our relationship with God. It involves actively listening to His voice and following His instructions. In this case, the people obeyed God by responding to the words of the prophet Haggai. Obedience to God’s voice demonstrates our trust and submission to His will.

Fear of the Lord:The verse also mentions that the people feared before the Lord. The fear of the Lord is not a paralysing fear but a reverential awe and respect for God. It is recognising His authority, holiness, and power. The fear of the Lord leads to obedience and wisdom (Proverbs 1:7). In this context, the people’s fear of the Lord helped them align their priorities with God’s will and inspired them to resume the work of rebuilding the temple.

Application:

  • Listening to God’s Voice:In our lives, it is essential to actively listen to God’s voice through reading the Bible, prayer, and seeking His guidance. When we hear His instructions, we should be willing to obey and follow them, just as Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the remnant of the people did. Obedience to God’s voice requires a heart that is receptive and responsive to Him.
  • Fear of the Lord:Cultivating a healthy fear of the Lord helps us maintain a right perspective and align our priorities with His. When we revere God, acknowledging His authority and holiness, we are more likely to honour Him in our decisions and actions. The fear of the Lord should motivate us to pursue righteousness and obedience in our lives.
  • Prioritising God’s Work:The people in Haggai’s time had become distracted by their own pursuits and neglected the rebuilding of the temple. Similarly, we can sometimes lose focus on God’s work due to various distractions or busyness. This verse reminds us of the importance of prioritising God’s work above our own desires. It encourages us to evaluate our priorities and ensure that we are actively involved in building His kingdom.

In conclusion, Haggai 1:12 teaches us about the significance of obedience to God’s voice and maintaining a healthy fear of the Lord. It reminds us to prioritise God’s work and align our lives with His will. By doing so, we can experience His blessings and be actively involved in building His kingdom on Earth.
