They shall not offer wine offrings to the Lord: neither shall they be pleasing vnto him: their sacrifices shalbe vnto them as the bread of mourners: all that eate thereof shall be polluted: for their bread for their soule shall not come into the house of the Lord. Hosea 9:4 (KJV)

The book of Hosea is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. It was written by the prophet Hosea, who was called by God to deliver His messages to the people of Israel during a time of spiritual decline and idolatry. The book contains both messages of judgment and promises of restoration.

Historical Background: At the time this verse was written, the northern kingdom of Israel was experiencing a period of rebellion against God and had fallen into idolatry. The people had forsaken the true worship of God and were offering sacrifices to false gods, engaging in immoral practices, and relying on alliances with foreign nations instead of trusting in God.

The Condemnation of False Worship: In Hosea 9:4 the prophet declares that the Israelites would not offer wine offerings to the LORD in a manner pleasing to Him. Their sacrifices would become “as the bread of mourners,” bringing sorrow rather than joy, and all who partook would be polluted and cut off from the blessings of God. Their bread for their soul would not enter the house of the LORD.

Spiritual and Moral Decay: The verse highlights the depth of spiritual and moral decay that had taken hold of the nation. By turning to false gods and pagan practices, the people separated themselves from God’s presence and protection.

The Importance of Sincere Worship: The passage stresses that external rituals without a genuine heart of devotion are meaningless to God. He desires worship that springs from a sincere, obedient heart that truly seeks Him.

Application to Our Lives: Though set in a specific historical context, the timeless lesson is to examine our own worship. We must ensure that our devotion is sincere, free from both literal and figurative idolatry, and that our actions reflect a heart committed to God’s commands.

In conclusion, Hosea 9:4 serves as a reminder of the importance of sincere worship and the serious consequences of false worship and disobedience. It calls each believer to examine the condition of their heart, to reject empty rituals, and to pursue genuine devotion to the LORD.
