Hosea 9:7
“The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred.”
Historical Context: The book of Hosea is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. Hosea was a prophet during the time when the northern kingdom of Israel was facing spiritual decay and moral corruption. The people had turned away from God and were engaging in idolatry and other sinful practices. Hosea’s prophecies were a call to repentance and a warning of the impending judgment.
Days of Visitation and Recompense: The verse begins by proclaiming the arrival of the “days of visitation” and the “days of recompense.” This refers to the time when God would judge Israel for their disobedience and sinful behaviour. The people would face the consequences of their actions, experiencing God’s retribution for their rebellion.
Israel’s Lack of Discernment: The verse continues by stating that Israel, as a nation, would come to realise this judgment. However, it also mentions that they would perceive the prophet as a fool and consider the spiritual man as mad. This indicates the people’s spiritual blindness and inability to discern the seriousness of their situation. Despite God’s warnings through His prophets, the people had become so entrenched in their sinful ways that they disregarded the messages of truth and righteousness.
The Multitude of Iniquity and Great Hatred: The verse concludes by attributing this lack of discernment to the “multitude of thine iniquity” and the “great hatred.” This emphasises the extent of Israel’s sinfulness and rebellion against God. Their hearts were filled with wickedness, and their actions were driven by hatred, both towards God and their fellow human beings.
