Isaiah 22:17

Posted on 18 May at 15:07
Listen to this article

“Behold, the LORD will carry thee away with a mighty captivity, and will surely cover thee.”

Context:This verse is part of a larger passage in Isaiah 22 where the prophet delivers a message of judgment against Jerusalem and its leaders. In this specific verse, Isaiah is addressing Shebna, who held the position of steward or administrator in King Hezekiah’s court.

The verse begins with the phrase “Behold, the LORD will carry thee away with a mighty captivity.” Here, the phrase “carry thee away” refers to Shebna being forcefully taken captive or exiled. This prophecy foretells the judgment that God will bring upon Shebna due to his arrogance and unfaithfulness.

The next phrase, “and will surely cover thee,” suggests that Shebna will be covered or overwhelmed by the judgment that is to come upon him. This can be understood as a metaphorical representation of God’s judgment being so severe and inescapable that it will completely engulf Shebna.

It is important to note that the context of this verse is crucial in understanding its meaning. Shebna had been abusing his position of authority, and instead of relying on God’s guidance, he was trusting in his own strength and security. Isaiah’s prophecy serves as a warning to Shebna, highlighting the consequences of his actions and the impending judgment that will come upon him.

Additionally, this verse can also serve as a broader reminder of God’s justice. It emphasizes that God holds people accountable for their actions and will execute judgment according to His righteous standards. It is a reminder that no one can escape the consequences of their choices and that ultimately, God is the ultimate judge.
