Isaiah 22:22

Listen to this article

“And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.”

Isaiah 22:22 is a verse from the book of Isaiah, which is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. This verse is part of a larger prophecy concerning the judgment and restoration of Jerusalem and the house of David.

In this particular verse, God speaks through the prophet Isaiah, describing a key that will be given to someone from the house of David. This key symbolises authority and control over access to the house of David, which represents the kingdom of Judah.

The phrase “the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder” indicates that this person will be entrusted with great authority and responsibility. The image of the key being laid on the shoulder suggests that this individual will carry the weight of this authority and have the power to open and shut doors.

The statement “so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open” emphasises the exclusive control this person will have. It signifies that the decisions made by this individual will be final and cannot be reversed or overturned by anyone else.

In a broader context, this verse holds messianic implications. Christians often interpret this verse as a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, who is considered the fulfilment of the messianic prophecies in the house of David. In the New Testament book of Revelation, Jesus refers to himself as the one who has “the key of David” (Revelation 3:7). This further strengthens the connection between Isaiah 22:22 and Jesus as the promised Messiah.

Overall, Isaiah 22:22 speaks of the authority and control that God bestows upon an individual from the house of David. It highlights the significance of this person’s role in the kingdom of Judah and points to Jesus Christ as the ultimate fulfilment of this prophecy.
