They shall lament for the teats, for the pleasant fieldes, for the fruitfull vine. Isaiah 32:12 (KJV)

Context: To understand the verse better, it’s essential to consider the broader context of the passage.

Isaiah was a prophet who delivered messages from God to the people of Israel.

In this particular section, Isaiah is addressing the impending judgement upon Judah for their disobedience and idolatry.

He warns them of the consequences they will face due to their unfaithfulness.

“They shall lament”: The word “lament” refers to mourning or expressing deep sorrow.

In this verse, it signifies the people’s response to the judgement that is coming upon them.

“For the teats”: The term “teats” is an old English word that refers to the breasts or milk‑producing glands of a woman or animal.

Here, it symbolises the loss of sustenance and nourishment.

It implies that the people will mourn the scarcity of food and resources, which will affect their livelihood and well‑being.

“For the pleasant fields”: The phrase “pleasant fields” represents the fertile lands and agricultural abundance that the people will lose.

It suggests that the judgement will bring desolation to the land, destroying the sources of their sustenance and livelihood.

“For the fruit‑ful vine”: The “fruitful vine” symbolises prosperity, abundance, and blessing.

The people will mourn the loss of their vineyards, which were a significant source of wealth and agricultural productivity.

It signifies the economic devastation that will occur as a result of the impending judgement.

“For the breasts of my people shall fail; for the fields of the land shall be desolate; for the vine shall wither, and the fig tree shall languish; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, shall be withered away: for joy is withered away from the sons of men.”

These phrases symbolize the loss of prosperity, abundance, and blessing.

The people will mourn the loss of their vineyards and orchards, which were significant sources of wealth and agricultural productivity, signifying economic devastation resulting from the impending judgement.

Overall, Isaiah 32:12 conveys a message of impending judgement and its consequences upon the people of Judah.

It highlights their lamentation over the loss of sustenance, agricultural abundance, and economic prosperity.

This verse serves as a warning to the people, urging them to turn away from their disobedience and idolatry and return to God’s ways to avoid such judgement.

As with any Bible study, it’s essential to consider the broader context, historical background, and consult other translations or commentaries to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the verse and its significance.
