Isaiah 33:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:06

“The LORD is exalted; for he dwelleth on high: he hath filled Zion with judgment and righteousness.”

Context: The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament that contains messages from God through the prophet Isaiah. This verse is part of a larger passage (Isaiah 33:2-6) that speaks of God’s deliverance and judgment on behalf of His people.

The exaltation of the LORD: The verse begins by declaring that the LORD is exalted. It emphasises the supreme position and authority of God. He is above all, sovereign, and deserving of honour and praise. This exaltation refers to God’s elevated status as the Creator and Ruler of all things.

God’s dwelling place: The verse further states that God dwells on high. This phrase suggests the transcendence and majesty of God. It highlights that God’s dwelling is not confined to earthly limitations but exists in a heavenly realm. This concept reminds us of the greatness and holiness of God, who is above and beyond our comprehension.

Filling Zion with judgment and righteousness: The verse continues by stating that God has filled Zion with judgment and righteousness. Zion is a reference to Jerusalem, which symbolises God’s dwelling place and His people. Here, “judgment” refers to God’s righteous and fair decisions, His administration of justice. “Righteousness” signifies conformity to God’s moral and ethical standards.

God’s rule and character: By filling Zion with judgment and righteousness, God demonstrates His perfect rule and character. He establishes justice and righteousness among His people, ensuring that His standards are upheld. This reveals God’s concern for justice and His desire for His people to live in accordance with His principles.

Overall, Isaiah 33:5 portrays God as the exalted One who dwells on high. It emphasises His sovereignty, justice, and righteousness. The verse reminds us of the importance of acknowledging God’s supreme authority and seeking to align our lives with His righteous standards.
