Isaiah 34:2

Listen to this article

“For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter.”

Isaiah 34:2 (KJV):

This verse is part of a larger passage in Isaiah where the prophet is prophesying about the judgment and destruction that will come upon the nations. Let’s explore the context and the deeper meaning of this verse.

Context:The book of Isaiah is divided into two main sections: chapters 1-39, which primarily address the nation of Judah before their exile, and chapters 40-66, which focus on the period of exile and the restoration of God’s people. Isaiah 34 falls within the first section, and it specifically speaks about the judgment that will come upon various nations.

Divine Indignation:The verse begins by declaring that “the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations.” Indignation refers to righteous anger or wrath. Here, it emphasises that God’s anger is directed towards all the nations. The nations mentioned in the following verses include Edom, a neighbouring nation of Judah, but the message extends to all nations, symbolising God’s judgment on a global scale.

Divine Fury:The verse continues by stating that God’s fury is upon the armies of these nations. The mention of armies suggests their military might and power. God’s fury represents His divine judgment and the consequence of the nations’ actions. It signifies the punishment and destruction that will befall them.

Utter Destruction:The verse emphasises that God has “utterly destroyed them.” This destruction points to the severe and complete judgment that God will bring upon the nations. It indicates that God’s judgment is not partial or temporary but thorough and complete.

Deliverance to the Slaughter:The verse concludes by stating that God has “delivered them to the slaughter.” This phrase emphasises that God has handed the nations over to be defeated and destroyed. It highlights the idea that their military strength and power will be of no avail against the judgment of God.

Overall, Isaiah 34:2 conveys the message that God’s anger and judgment are not limited to a particular nation but extend to all the nations. It serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and His role as the ultimate judge. The verse portrays the consequences that await those who rebel against God and highlights the need for repentance and obedience.

It’s essential to note that while this verse speaks of God’s judgment in historical and prophetic terms, it is essential to approach such passages with humility and seek to understand them within the broader context of God’s character and the redemptive message of the Bible.
