Isaiah 37:15

“And Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord, saying,”

Context:This verse marks a significant moment in the historical narrative found in the book of Isaiah. To understand the context, it is helpful to examine the preceding verses.

In Isaiah 37, the Assyrian army, led by King Sennacherib, had launched a military campaign against the kingdom of Judah, threatening to conquer Jerusalem. Hezekiah, the righteous king of Judah, was deeply concerned about the situation and sought guidance from the prophet Isaiah.

Hezekiah’s prayer in verse 15 demonstrates his reliance on God in a time of crisis. He understood the importance of seeking the Lord’s help and turning to Him in prayer. This act of prayer reveals Hezekiah’s faith and trust in God’s sovereignty and ability to intervene in the affairs of his people.

This verse serves as a reminder to believers today that prayer is a powerful tool in times of trouble. It emphasizes the importance of seeking God’s guidance, wisdom, and intervention when faced with challenging circumstances. Hezekiah’s example encourages us to approach God with humility, honesty, and an earnest desire for His will to be done.

The subsequent verses in Isaiah 37 describe the response of God to Hezekiah’s prayer. God sends a message through the prophet Isaiah, assuring Hezekiah that He has heard his prayer and will deliver Jerusalem from the hands of the Assyrians. Ultimately, the Lord fulfils His promise by sending an angel who strikes down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, leading to the withdrawal of the Assyrian army (Isaiah 37:36-37).

This Bible study on Isaiah 37:15 reminds us that prayer is not merely a religious ritual but a means of connecting with God and seeking His intervention. It highlights the importance of relying on God’s power and trusting in His faithfulness in times of adversity. Through Hezekiah’s prayer, we learn the significance of approaching God with a sincere heart, knowing that He hears and responds to the cries of His people.

As we reflect on this passage, we can be encouraged to cultivate a habit of prayer in our own lives, seeking God’s guidance, protection, and deliverance. Just as Hezekiah’s prayer was answered, we can have confidence that our prayers, when offered with faith and sincerity, are heard by our loving and sovereign God.
