Isaiah 37:23

Posted on 18 May at 15:06
Listen to this article

“Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.”

Context:In this verse, we find the prophet Isaiah delivering a message to the Assyrian king, Sennacherib. Sennacherib had launched a campaign to conquer Judah and had sent his high officials to Jerusalem to deliver a message of intimidation to King Hezekiah.

Isaiah 37:23 represents a response to Sennacherib’s arrogance and blasphemy against God. It is important to understand the historical context to fully grasp the significance of this verse. Sennacherib’s boastful words were an affront not only to King Hezekiah but also to the Lord Himself. Sennacherib’s actions were disrespectful, insulting, and carried the audacity of challenging the sovereignty of God.

In this verse, Isaiah asks Sennacherib a series of questions to make him reflect on his actions. The questions are as follows:

“Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed?” Isaiah points out that Sennacherib has reproached and blasphemed someone. In this context, it is God whom he has insulted. Sennacherib’s words and actions were disrespectful and derogatory towards the Lord.

“Against whom hast thou exalted thy voice?” Sennacherib had arrogantly raised his voice in defiance. His prideful words were aimed at challenging the authority of God.

“And lifted up thine eyes on high?” This phrase suggests that Sennacherib had looked up towards heaven in a posture of defiance and arrogance. It symbolizes his attempt to assert his power and superiority over the God of Israel.

Isaiah’s question “even against the Holy One of Israel” emphasizes that Sennacherib’s actions were not just against any ordinary entity but against the Holy One, the God of Israel. It serves as a reminder to Sennacherib of the divine nature and power of the God he was defying.

Overall, Isaiah 37:23 captures the prideful and blasphemous attitude of Sennacherib towards God. It highlights the contrast between the arrogance of the Assyrian king and the sovereignty and holiness of the God of Israel. It reminds us of the importance of reverence and respect towards God, as well as the consequences of challenging His authority.
