Isaiah 37:37

Listen to this article

“So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.”

Isaiah 37:37 is part of a larger passage that recounts the events surrounding the Assyrian invasion of Judah during the reign of King Hezekiah. Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, had sent his general with a great army to besiege Jerusalem and intimidate the people. The general, Rabshakeh, had mocked and threatened the Israelites, boasting about the power of the Assyrian empire and discouraging them from trusting in God.

In response to these threats, King Hezekiah sought the Lord’s help and sent a message to the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah delivered a message from God, assuring Hezekiah that the Lord would defend Jerusalem and cause the Assyrians to be defeated. Isaiah 37:36 describes the miraculous intervention of God, as an angel of the Lord struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in a single night.

Following this divine intervention, Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, departed from the land of Judah and returned to his capital city of Nineveh. This verse, Isaiah 37:37, simply states that Sennacherib left and dwelt in Nineveh, signifying the end of the immediate threat to Judah.

This passage highlights several important themes:

Trust in God’s protection:Despite the overwhelming strength of the Assyrian army, King Hezekiah chose to trust in the Lord rather than rely on his own military might. He turned to God in prayer and sought the counsel of the prophet Isaiah. The subsequent deliverance of Jerusalem demonstrated the faithfulness of God in protecting His people.

Divine intervention:The sudden and complete defeat of the Assyrian army by an angel of the Lord emphasizes God’s sovereignty and power. The Lord intervened on behalf of His people, demonstrating His ability to bring about deliverance in extraordinary ways.

The downfall of the proud:Sennacherib, known for his arrogance and pride, had threatened the people of Judah and defied the God of Israel. However, his boasting was ultimately brought to nothing, and he was forced to retreat. This serves as a reminder that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Fulfillment of prophecy:The events described in Isaiah 37 were a fulfillment of the prophecy given through Isaiah. The Lord had foretold the defeat of the Assyrians and the preservation of Jerusalem, and His word came to pass exactly as He had declared.

In conclusion, Isaiah 37:37 marks the departure of Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, from Judah after the miraculous intervention of God. This passage serves as a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness, His ability to protect His people, and the fulfillment of His prophetic word.
