Isaiah 37:6
“And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.”
Historical Context:Isaiah 37:6 is part of the larger narrative of the Assyrian invasion of Judah during the reign of King Hezekiah. The Assyrian king, Sennacherib, had sent his representatives to deliver a threatening message to King Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem, boasting about his conquests and belittling the power of the Lord.
Isaiah, the prophet of God, was called upon to deliver a message of reassurance and hope to King Hezekiah. In response to the threats and blasphemies of the Assyrian king, Isaiah conveys a message directly from the Lord, instructing Hezekiah and the people not to fear the intimidating words they had heard.
Trusting in the Lord:This verse emphasizes the importance of trusting in the Lord and not being afraid of the threats or taunts of the enemy. The Lord reminds Hezekiah and the people that the Assyrians’ blasphemy is ultimately directed towards God Himself, and He assures them that He will handle the situation.
God’s Sovereignty and Protection:Isaiah’s message affirms the sovereignty and power of God. The Assyrian king may have boasted of his military conquests, but Isaiah reminds the people that it is God who holds ultimate authority over all nations. Despite the Assyrians’ blasphemous words, God assures His people of His protection and promises to defend His name against those who oppose Him.
- The Role of Isaiah:
- Isaiah 37:6 serves as a reminder to believers today that we should not be afraid of the threats or challenges we face. In the face of opposition or discouragement, we can trust in the Lord’s sovereignty and protection. We should not allow the words of others or the circumstances around us to shake our faith. Instead, we should remain steadfast, knowing that God is with us and will uphold His name.
