Isaiah 37:8

Posted on 18 May at 15:06
Listen to this article

“So Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.”

Historical Context:To fully understand Isaiah 37:8, it’s essential to consider the broader historical context. The book of Isaiah records the prophecies and events during the time of Isaiah, who was a prophet in the southern kingdom of Judah. During this period, the Assyrian Empire was expanding and posed a significant threat to the surrounding nations.

Prior to the events of Isaiah 37, the Assyrian field commander, known as Rabshakeh, was sent by King Sennacherib to deliver a message to King Hezekiah in Jerusalem. Rabshakeh insulted and belittled both King Hezekiah and the God of Israel, urging the people of Judah to surrender and abandon their trust in God.

The Assyrian Advance:In verse 8, it is mentioned that Rabshakeh returned to the Assyrian king and found him warring against Libnah. Libnah was a fortified city located southwest of Jerusalem. This indicates that the Assyrian army had progressed from their previous conquest of Lachish, another city of Judah.

Implications:The Assyrian invasion was a dire threat to Judah and Jerusalem. King Hezekiah, in response to Rabshakeh’s message, sought the counsel of the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah reassured the king and delivered a message from God, promising deliverance and the defeat of the Assyrian army.

This verse serves as a historical marker, documenting the progress of the Assyrian army as they continued their campaign against the cities of Judah. It sets the stage for the subsequent events and the miraculous intervention of God in response to Hezekiah’s prayers.

Overall, Isaiah 37:8 provides a glimpse into the historical context and the ongoing threat faced by the kingdom of Judah at the hands of the Assyrians. It highlights the urgency of the situation and sets the stage for the dramatic events that follow.
