Isaiah 39:5

Then sayde Isaiah to Hezekiah, Heare the word of the Lord of hostes. Isaiah 39:5 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a historical account set in the reign of King Hezekiah over the kingdom of Judah. Earlier Hezekiah had suffered a serious illness, but by the time of this encounter he had recovered, and envoys from Babylon had come to Jerusalem. The biblical text does not specify that the Babylonians inquired about the miraculous sign associated with his illness; rather they were sent after his recovery. Proud of his accomplishments, Hezekiah showed the envoys all the treasures of his house and the wealth of the kingdom.

In response, the prophet Isaiah says, “Hear the word of the Lord of hosts.” The title “Lord of hosts” identifies God as the ruler of the heavenly armies, emphasizing His supreme sovereignty and power. Isaiah’s message continues in the following verses, foretelling that everything Hezekiah displayed to the Babylonian envoys will be carried away to Babylon. The prophecy also predicts that some of Hezekiah’s descendants will become eunuchs in the palace of the Babylonian king.

The passage serves as a stark warning against pride and the lack of discretion demonstrated by Hezekiah. By flaunting the nation’s riches before a foreign power, he exposed a vulnerability that would later contribute to the Babylonian captivity and the exile of Israel. From a broader perspective, the narrative underscores the importance of humility and reliance on God. Hezekiah’s self‑sufficiency is presented as unwise, urging believers to recognise their dependence on God and to place His will above personal ambition.

In summary, Isaiah 39:5 captures a critical moment in the relationship between King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah. It highlights the need for humility and obedience to divine guidance, reminding us to seek God’s wisdom and to trust His direction in every aspect of our lives.
