And it shall come to passe, that hee that is left in Zion, and hee that remaineth in Ierusalem, shall be called Holy, euen euery one that is written among the liuing in Ierusalem, Isaiah 4:3 (KJV)

Context: Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, attributed to the prophet Isaiah. The book contains messages of judgment, warning, and hope for the people of Israel. In this particular verse, Isaiah is speaking about a future time of restoration and purification.

Spiritual Remnant: The verse begins by mentioning those who are “left in Zion” and “remaineth in Jerusalem.” These phrases refer to a spiritual remnant, a small group of faithful believers who have not been consumed by the judgments and calamities that befall the nation. It signifies a group of people who have remained faithful to God despite the unfaithfulness of others.

Called Holy: The verse states that the ones who are left in Zion and Jerusalem shall be called holy. This highlights their being set apart for God’s purposes, reflecting His character and living in accordance with His will.

Not Put to Shame: The verse states that the ones who are left in Zion and Jerusalem shall not be put to shame any more. This highlights the protection and vindication that will occur among this remnant. While the term “holy” is not used in the verse, the promise of being spared disgrace reflects a special standing before God.

Living in Jerusalem: The phrase “every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem” suggests they have survived the judgments and calamities, signifying their continued presence in Jerusalem. The phrase does not explicitly speak of names being written among the living, but the assurance of security in Jerusalem implies a continued presence and vitality for the faithful community.

Application: While this verse initially spoke to the people of Israel in a specific historical context, it can also inspire believers today. It reminds us that even in times of adversity and judgment, there is a remnant of faithful followers of God who will remain, be preserved, and be protected from shame. It encourages us to remain steadfast in our faith, living in obedience to God’s Word, and trusting in His promises.

Isaiah 4:3 speaks of a future time when a faithful remnant will remain in Zion and Jerusalem, and they will be called holy.

Isaiah 4:3 speaks of a future time when a faithful remnant will remain in Zion and Jerusalem, and they will be spared disgrace.

It emphasizes the protection and vindication of this remnant and signifies their secure place in God’s kingdom.

As believers, we can draw inspiration from this verse to remain faithful and strive for integrity in our own lives.
