Isaiah 43:23

Thou hast not brought mee the small cattell of thy burnt offrings, neither hast thou honoured mee with thy sacrifices. I haue not caused thee to serue with an offring, nor wearied thee with incense. Isaiah 43:23 (KJV)

In Isaiah 43 the prophet delivers a message of comfort and hope to the Israelites, reminding them of God’s faithfulness and of His promises to protect and deliver His people. Earlier in the chapter, verse 22 notes Israel’s failure to call upon God, saying, “But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.” Verse 24 adds that the people have “wearied” God with their iniquities. Within this context, verse 23 records God’s rebuke that the people have not brought the prescribed “small cattle” for burnt offerings and have not honored Him with their sacrifices.

The “small cattle” refers to lambs or other small animals that were to be offered as burnt sacrifices according to the Law of Moses. The Israelites were performing the outward rituals of sacrifice but were lacking genuine devotion and obedience. Their worship had become a mere formality, relying on ritualistic practices rather than the heart of true worship. Because of this, their offerings lost significance and became empty rituals instead of heartfelt expressions of reverence and devotion.

God emphasizes that He has not forced them to serve with an offering nor wearied them with incense. In other words, He has not burdened them with excessive sacrificial demands; rather, He has been patient and merciful, giving them the opportunity to return to sincere worship.

Application: This passage challenges each believer to examine personal worship. It reminds us that God desires genuine, heartfelt worship rather than empty religious motions. True worship flows from a sincere relationship with Him, marked by wholehearted commitment, devotion, and obedience, not merely by going through the motions of ritual sacrifice.
