Isaiah 44:15

Posted on 18 May at 15:06
Listen to this article

“Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.”

Context: To understand the verse better, let’s consider its context. The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book written by the prophet Isaiah, who ministered to the kingdom of Judah during a time of political turmoil. In this passage, Isaiah is addressing the idolatry and foolishness of those who worship idols instead of the true God.

Idolatry and Folly: The verse describes a person who cuts down a tree, uses part of it to warm himself and bake bread, but then takes the remaining wood to craft an idol. This idol is then worshipped as a god, despite being a lifeless graven image. This verse highlights the foolishness of idolatry, where people invest their time, resources, and devotion into things that are incapable of hearing or responding to them.

Contrast: The contrast presented in this verse is striking. On one hand, the person takes a piece of wood to keep himself warm and bake bread, recognizing its practical use and value. On the other hand, the same person takes the same material and forms it into an idol, attributing divine power and authority to it. This contrast serves as a rebuke to the Israelites for their misguided worship and their failure to acknowledge the true God who provides for their needs.

Warning against Idolatry: The verse serves as a warning against the sin of idolatry, which was a prevalent problem in the ancient world. Idol worship was a direct violation of the first commandment given by God to Moses (Exodus 20:3-5). It is a reminder that we should not place our trust, devotion, or worship in anything or anyone other than the one true God.

Application: Although this verse specifically addresses the issue of idolatry, it carries broader implications for our lives today. We may not carve physical idols out of wood, but we can still be tempted to place our trust in material possessions, success, relationships, or other things that can become idols in our hearts. It reminds us to examine our own lives and identify any areas where we may be giving undue importance or worship to something other than God.

  • In summary, Isaiah 44:15 condemns the foolishness of idolatry and warns against attributing divine power to man-made objects. It serves as a reminder to prioritise our worship and devotion to the one true God and not to be deceived by the false allure of idols.
