Isaiah 44:18

Posted on 18 May at 15:06
Listen to this article

“They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.”

Context: They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand. Isaiah 44:18 (KJV)

This verse is a part of a larger passage in which the prophet Isaiah addresses the foolishness of idolatry. In this particular verse, Isaiah highlights the ignorance and lack of understanding among those who worship idols. Let’s examine the verse in its broader context to gain a better understanding of its meaning.

The preceding verses in Isaiah 44 depict the creation of idols and the futility of worshiping them. The prophet exposes the absurdity of shaping gods from wood or metal and bowing down to them. In contrast, Isaiah emphasizes the greatness and uniqueness of the Lord, the true God of Israel.

When we come to Isaiah 44:18, we encounter a statement about the spiritual blindness and lack of comprehension exhibited by idolaters. The verse declares, “They have not known nor understood.” This indicates that the idolaters lack true knowledge and wisdom regarding spiritual matters. Their ignorance stems from the fact that God has, in a sense, “shut their eyes” and “their hearts” so they cannot perceive the truth.

In the biblical context, the shutting of eyes and hearts is a consequence of the idolaters’ rejection of God and their persistent devotion to idols. God, in response to their rebellion, allows them to remain spiritually blind and unaware of His presence and truth.

It’s important to note that this verse does not suggest that God actively blinds people against their will or punishes them arbitrarily. Rather, it points to the spiritual consequences of idolatry and the hardening of hearts that can occur when individuals persistently reject God’s revelation.

Isaiah’s message in this passage serves as a call to Israel and all believers to turn away from idols and seek the true knowledge and understanding that come from a relationship with the living God. The verse reminds us of the importance of genuine worship and devotion to God, acknowledging His wisdom and seeking His truth.

Overall, Isaiah 44:18, within its larger context, emphasizes the spiritual blindness that idolatry brings and highlights the need for true knowledge and understanding of God. It prompts us to reflect on our own lives and ensure that our worship and devotion are directed toward the one true God, who alone can open our eyes and hearts to His truth.
