Isaiah 45:23

Listen to this article

“I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.”

Context:The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written by the prophet Isaiah. This particular verse is found in a section of Isaiah where God is declaring His sovereignty and power over all nations and rulers. In Isaiah 45, God speaks through the prophet Isaiah to Cyrus, the Persian king whom God had chosen to deliver Israel from Babylonian captivity.

Sworn by Himself:God begins by declaring that He has sworn by Himself, emphasizing the certainty and unchangeability of His words. This highlights the importance and reliability of what He is about to say.

The Word in Righteousness:God declares that His word has gone out of His mouth in righteousness. This signifies that what He speaks is just, true, and aligned with His character. God’s promises and declarations are always founded on righteousness and truth.

Every Knee Shall Bow:The verse states that “unto me every knee shall bow.” This phrase speaks of universal recognition and submission to God’s authority. It points to a future time when every person, both believers and non-believers, will acknowledge God’s sovereignty and bow before Him.

Every Tongue Shall Swear:The verse also says that “every tongue shall swear.” This indicates that every tongue will confess or acknowledge God’s lordship. It emphasizes that not only will every person recognize God’s authority, but they will also openly confess it.

The Fulfillment:This verse in Isaiah is echoed in the New Testament in the book of Philippians. In Philippians 2:9-11, the apostle Paul writes that because of Jesus’ obedience and sacrifice, God has highly exalted Him and bestowed upon Him the name that is above every name. It further states that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

This New Testament reference connects Isaiah’s prophecy to the person of Jesus Christ. It reveals that Jesus is the fulfillment of Isaiah 45:23. Ultimately, this verse points to the final judgment when all people, believers and non-believers alike, will bow before God and confess Jesus Christ as Lord.
