Isaiah 48:20

“Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say ye, The LORD hath redeemed his servant Jacob.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of Isaiah where God is speaking to the Israelites and delivering a message of deliverance and redemption. Let’s explore the verse in its context to gain a better understanding.

The book of Isaiah contains prophecies and messages from God to the Israelites during a time of great turmoil and captivity. In this particular passage, God is addressing the people who are in exile in Babylon under the rule of the Chaldeans.

The verse begins with the command to “Go ye forth of Babylon.” God is instructing the Israelites to leave Babylon, the place of their captivity, and to separate themselves from the Chaldeans, who were their captors. This call to leave Babylon is an invitation to return to their homeland, Jerusalem, and rebuild their lives.

The next part of the verse says, “Flee ye from the Chaldeans.” This emphasizes the urgency and necessity for the Israelites to escape their captors and the oppressive environment of Babylon. The word “flee” implies a sense of haste and quick action, indicating that they should not delay but leave immediately.

The verse continues, “With a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth.” Here, God instructs the Israelites to proclaim their deliverance with joy and singing. It is a call to celebrate their freedom from captivity and to share the good news of their redemption. The phrase “even to the end of the earth” suggests that the news of God’s deliverance should be proclaimed far and wide, reaching all nations.

The verse concludes with the declaration, “Say ye, The LORD hath redeemed his servant Jacob.” This statement affirms that the redemption and deliverance of the Israelites from Babylonian captivity is the work of the Lord. It emphasizes God’s faithfulness to His covenant with the descendants of Jacob, whom He calls His servant.
