Listen to this article

“Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.”

Context:The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and Isaiah 50 is part of the "Servant Songs," which speak about the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. In this particular verse, the focus is on those who fear the Lord and obey His voice but find themselves in a state of darkness.

Fear of the Lord:The verse begins by addressing those who fear the Lord. This fear is not a terrified or anxious fear but a reverential awe and respect for God. It signifies a recognition of His sovereignty, holiness, and authority. The fear of the Lord is an important aspect of a believer’s relationship with God and is often connected to obedience and wisdom.

Obedience to the Voice of His Servant:The verse emphasizes obedience to the voice of God’s servant. In the broader context of Isaiah, the servant is often understood as a reference to the Messiah, Jesus Christ. As believers, we are called to listen and obey the teachings and commands of Jesus, who is the ultimate servant of God and the perfect example of obedience.

Walking in Darkness:The verse describes a situation where the one who fears the Lord and obeys His voice finds themselves in darkness. This darkness can represent various challenges, trials, or difficulties that a believer may encounter in their life, such as spiritual confusion, personal struggles, or external opposition.

Trusting in the Name of the Lord:Despite walking in darkness, the verse offers a solution for the one who fears the Lord and lacks light. It encourages such a person to trust in the name of the Lord. "Name" in this context refers to God’s character, authority, and faithfulness. Trusting in the name of the Lord involves relying on His nature and promises, even when circumstances seem dark or uncertain.

Staying upon His God:The verse concludes by urging the one in darkness to "stay upon his God." This phrase signifies a steadfast and unwavering reliance on God. It speaks of remaining firmly attached to God, clinging to Him in faith and trust, regardless of the circumstances. It implies a deepening of one’s relationship with God and a commitment to rely on His strength and guidance.
