Listen to this article

“For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.”

Historical Context:Isaiah 50 is part of the book of Isaiah, which contains prophecies and messages from God to the people of Israel. In this particular chapter, the prophet Isaiah speaks on behalf of the servant of the Lord, who is often interpreted as a Messianic figure representing Jesus Christ.

  • Trust in God’s Help:

The verse begins with the assurance that the Lord God will help the speaker. It conveys a strong sense of confidence and trust in God’s intervention. This trust in God’s help is a recurring theme throughout the book of Isaiah, emphasizing the faithfulness of God in delivering His people.

Unshakable Confidence:The verse continues by stating that the speaker will not be confounded or put to shame. This highlights the unwavering confidence and assurance the speaker possesses in God’s assistance. It demonstrates a steadfast belief that God’s provision and guidance will ensure their victory over any adversity or opposition they may face.

Setting the Face Like a Flint:The phrase “therefore have I set my face like a flint” signifies determination and resolve. In biblical times, flint was a hard rock that could be used to make tools or start fires. By using this imagery, the speaker portrays their unyielding commitment to their mission or purpose, regardless of the challenges or opposition they encounter. It implies a resolute focus and an unwavering determination to fulfill God’s plan.

Not Being Ashamed:The verse concludes by affirming the speaker’s conviction that they will not be ashamed. This suggests that they trust in God’s faithfulness and righteousness, knowing that their actions and obedience will ultimately be vindicated. It is a declaration of confidence in God’s ability to uphold their cause and bring about a favourable outcome.
