Isaiah 59:19

Listen to this article

“So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.”

Context:Isaiah 59 is a chapter that describes the sins of the people of Israel and their need for salvation. In this verse, Isaiah prophesies about the ultimate victory of God over their enemies and the restoration of His people.

Fear and Reverence for the Lord:The verse begins by stating that the people shall fear the name of the Lord from the west and His glory from the rising of the sun. This signifies a universal reverence and awe for God that will spread to all nations. It emphasises the importance of recognising God’s greatness and submitting to His authority.

The Enemy’s Onslaught:The verse continues by describing an enemy that comes in like a flood. This imagery portrays a situation where the enemy’s attack is overwhelming and seemingly unstoppable. It could refer to both physical adversaries that Israel faced in their history as well as spiritual forces of evil.

The Standard of the Lord:Despite the overwhelming flood of the enemy, the Spirit of the Lord raises a standard against them. The "standard" can refer to a banner or a rallying point in battle. It represents the power and authority of God being raised against the enemy. In times of trouble and spiritual warfare, God Himself intervenes on behalf of His people and ensures their victory.

Spiritual Application:This verse holds significance beyond its historical context. It points to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ and the victory He achieved on the cross. Through His sacrifice, Jesus conquered sin, death, and the power of the enemy. The Spirit of the Lord is now present among believers, empowering them to stand against spiritual forces and live victoriously.

  • Application for Believers:As believers, we can take encouragement from this verse. It reminds us that no matter how powerful or overwhelming the enemy may appear, God is with us. The Spirit of the Lord is our strength, and He will enable us to overcome the challenges we face. We are called to fear and reverence the Lord, trusting in His power and seeking His guidance in all circumstances.

In conclusion, Isaiah 59:19 reminds us of the fear and reverence due to the name and glory of the Lord. It assures us that even when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will raise a standard against them. As believers, we can find comfort in this promise and trust in God’s power to deliver us from any adversity we may encounter.
