Isaiah 6:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:09

And the posts of the doore moued at the voyce of him that cryed, and the house was filled with smoke. Isaiah 6:4 (KJV)

Context: Isaiah 6 records the prophet Isaiah’s vision of God’s glory and his commissioning as a prophet. In this particular verse, Isaiah describes the response of the temple to the voice of the Lord.

The temple is significant in the Old Testament as a place where God’s presence dwelt among His people. It represented a meeting place between God and humanity. In this vision, the temple symbolizes the heavenly dwelling place of God and the spiritual realm.

The posts of the door symbolize the threshold or entrance to the temple. The fact that they moved indicates the power and impact of the voice of the Lord. The voice of God is so powerful that it causes the very structure of the temple to tremble, signifying the awe‑inspiring presence and authority of God.

The filling of the house with smoke signifies the manifestation of God’s glory. Throughout the Bible, smoke often represents the presence of God. For example, during the dedication of Solomon’s temple, the glory of the Lord filled the temple, and the priests were unable to stand in His presence because the house was filled with the LORD’s glory (1 Kings 8:10‑11). A related account describing a cloud of smoke occurs in 2 Chronicles 5:13‑14. The smoke symbolizes the mystery, holiness, and transcendence of God.

Isaiah’s vision of the moving posts and the filling of the house with smoke reveals the overwhelming power and majesty of God. It reminds us that God is not confined to earthly temples but reigns supreme in the spiritual realm. This passage invites us to approach God with reverence and awe, recognizing His authority and holiness.

Additionally, the imagery of the moving posts and the smoke serves as a reminder that encountering God’s presence can be a transformative experience. Just as Isaiah was convicted of his sin and called to be a prophet, we too should allow the encounter with God to bring about personal transformation and a deeper commitment to His purposes.

In summary, Isaiah 6:4 portrays the powerful impact of God’s voice on the temple and the manifestation of His glory through the smoke. It calls us to approach God with reverence, seek His transformative presence, and respond to His call on our lives.
