Isaiah 61:9

Posted on 18 May at 15:05

“And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed.”

Isaiah 61 is a well-known Messianic prophecy that speaks of the coming Messiah and the restoration and blessings that will be bestowed upon God’s people. In verse 9, the focus shifts to the future generations of the people of Israel.

This verse begins by stating that the descendants or “seed” of God’s people will be known among the Gentiles, referring to the non-Jewish nations or peoples. This suggests that the influence and impact of the Israelites will extend beyond their own nation and reach the nations of the world. The faithfulness, righteousness, and blessings upon the people of God will be evident and recognised by others.

Furthermore, the verse states that the offspring or descendants of God’s people will be acknowledged by all who see them. This acknowledgment implies a recognition and acceptance of their special status and the blessings that they possess. It signifies that the favour and blessings from the Lord upon the people of God will be visible and evident for all to witness.

The phrase “that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed” emphasises the divine blessing upon the offspring of God’s people. This blessing originates from the Lord Himself, indicating that their prosperity and favour are not a result of human efforts or achievements, but rather a result of God’s graciousness and faithfulness to His covenant with His people.

In a broader context, this verse highlights the future restoration and exaltation of God’s people. It points to a time when God’s blessings and favour will be evident not only within the nation of Israel but also among the nations of the world. The fulfilment of this prophecy finds its ultimate expression in Jesus Christ, who came as the Messiah to bless and redeem not only the Jewish people but all nations.
