Who is this that commeth from Edom, with died garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, trauelling in the greatnesse of his strength? I that speake in righteousnesse, mightie to saue. Isaiah 63:1 (KJV)

Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

Context and Background: The book of Isaiah is one of the major prophetic books in the Old Testament. It contains prophecies and messages from God given to the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah 63:1 is part of a larger passage known as the “Song of the Redeemer” or the “Messianic Song” that extends from Isaiah 63:1 to Isaiah 64:12. The passage speaks of God’s judgment and salvation.

Symbolic Language: In Isaiah 63:1, the passage uses symbolic language to describe a figure who is coming from Edom, a region south of Israel, with dyed garments from Bozrah, a city in Edom. This figure is described as glorious in apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength. The symbolic language points to a powerful and victorious warrior-like figure.

Identity of the Figure: One interpretation views this figure as the Lord Himself, coming in judgment and salvation. Another interpretation sees this figure as the Messianic deliverer, representing Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, the book of Revelation 19:13 echoes the language of dyed garments, suggesting a connection between the two passages and reinforcing the Messianic interpretation.

Judgment and Salvation: The passage emphasizes the righteousness and might of the figure coming from Edom. The mention of righteousness highlights God’s faithfulness to His promises and His commitment to justice. The figure is described as “mighty to save,” indicating that his purpose is to bring salvation and deliverance. This points to God’s redemptive plan for His people.

Application: As we reflect on Isaiah 63:1, we can draw several key lessons.

Trust in God’s righteousness: The passage reminds us that God is righteous and just. We can trust in His character and His judgments.

God’s salvation and deliverance: The figure described in Isaiah 63:1 represents God’s saving power. It reminds us that God is mighty to save and deliver us from any situation we face.

The fulfillment in Jesus Christ: As Christians, we see the fulfillment of this passage in Jesus Christ. Jesus came to fulfill God’s redemptive plan, bringing salvation through His death and resurrection.

Victory over sin and evil: The imagery of the figure’s dyed garments and his triumph over Edom symbolizes victory over sin and evil. Through Jesus Christ, we can experience victory over sin and find hope in the midst of struggles.

In conclusion, Isaiah 63:1 speaks of a figure coming from Edom with dyed garments, symbolizing a powerful and victorious warrior. The passage points to God’s righteousness, might, and salvation. As Christians, we see the fulfillment of this passage in Jesus Christ, who came to bring salvation and victory over sin and evil.
