Isaiah 63:4

Listen to this article

For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the yeere of my redeemed is come. Isaiah 63:4 (KJV)

Isaiah 63:4 is part of a larger passage in which the prophet Isaiah speaks on behalf of the Lord, recounting the Lord’s mighty acts of salvation and judgment for His people. To understand the verse it is essential to consider its surrounding context. In Isaiah 63 the prophet describes a vision of the Lord coming from Edom, an area representing the enemies of God’s people. The imagery of the Lord’s garments stained with blood portrays His victory over those adversaries.

The phrase “the day of vengeance” refers to the time when God will execute His judgment and retribution against His enemies. It signifies divine justice and punishment for those who oppose God and persecute His people, echoing other biblical instances where God intervenes to vindicate His righteous cause.

The expression “the year of my redeemed” (or “the year of my redemption”) denotes a specific period when God’s people, the redeemed, experience deliverance and restoration. It signifies a time of favor, blessing, and liberation, highlighting God’s faithfulness to rescue and redeem His chosen ones.

Application of the verse has both historical and spiritual dimensions. Historically it points to Israel’s deliverance, while spiritually it points to the final judgment when God will righteously judge all evil and establish His eternal kingdom. The “year of my redeemed” also speaks of the salvation and redemption made available through Jesus Christ, representing the present age in which believers experience God’s grace and the freedom found in Christ.

Overall, Isaiah 63:4 underscores God’s role as a just Judge, His commitment to deliver His people, and the ultimate victory and restoration He brings. It reminds believers of God’s sovereignty over all things and encourages trust in His perfect timing, knowing that He will bring justice and redemption as promised.

Different interpretations and perspectives may exist for this verse, and studying Scripture in its entirety provides a more comprehensive understanding.
