Listen to this article

When thou diddest terrible things which wee looked not for, thou camest downe, the mountaines flowed downe at thy presence. Isaiah 64:3 (KJV)

Historical Context:

The book of Isaiah is a prophetic work in the Old Testament, written by the prophet Isaiah during a time of great upheaval in Judah. Isaiah served as a prophet to the Southern Kingdom of Judah, and his messages were primarily directed toward the people of Judah and Jerusalem. In this verse, Isaiah reflects on past experiences of God’s deliverance and divine intervention, recalling moments when God acted in ways that surpassed human expectation.

The Unexpected Works of God:

The verse opens by acknowledging the “terrible things which we looked not for,” a phrase that highlights God’s power to act beyond human anticipation. Throughout history, God has surprised His people with acts of deliverance, judgment, and intervention that were both awe‑inspiring and purposeful. This reminds believers that God’s ways are not always predictable, yet they are always intentional and sovereign.

Divine Manifestation:

Isaiah continues, “thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.” The imagery portrays a grand display of divine authority, where the mighty mountains trembled and melted like wax before Him. This vivid picture emphasizes the majesty of God’s presence and His ability to bring about dramatic changes in nature and circumstance, underscoring the overwhelming power that accompanies His coming.

Application to Our Lives:

Isaiah 64:3 encourages believers to trust in God’s sovereignty and to rely on His power rather than solely on our own understanding or expectations. The verse reassures us that God is not limited by our circumstances; He can bring radical transformation and deliverance when we least expect it. As we face seemingly impossible challenges or bewildering events, we are invited to turn to God, confident that He can work in ways that surpass our comprehension. By embracing this truth, we cultivate faith in His ability to accomplish the unexpected and allow His purposes to prevail in every difficulty we encounter.
