Isaiah 65:7

Listen to this article

“Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, saith the Lord, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their bosom.”

Context: To understand Isaiah 65:7 better, it’s important to consider the broader context of the verse. The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and it contains messages from the prophet Isaiah to the people of Israel during a time of rebellion and idolatry. In this particular chapter, Isaiah is speaking about God’s judgment on both rebellious Israel and those who have faithfully followed Him.

Iniquities and the Iniquities of Your Fathers: The verse begins by mentioning “your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together.” This suggests a continuation of sinful behavior from one generation to the next. It indicates that the current generation is following in the footsteps of their ancestors in terms of their rebellion against God.

Burning Incense upon the Mountains and Blaspheming God: The verse goes on to describe specific actions committed by the people, such as burning incense upon the mountains and blaspheming God upon the hills. Burning incense on mountains and hills was a form of idolatrous worship, contrary to the commandments of God. It symbolizes the people’s turning away from the true worship of God and engaging in pagan practices.

Divine Judgment: The verse concludes by stating that due to their sins, God will measure their former work into their bosom. This indicates that God will bring judgment upon the people for their iniquities. The phrase “measure their former work into their bosom” suggests that they will receive the consequences of their actions, bearing the weight of their own guilt.

  • Application: While Isaiah 65:7 specifically addresses the rebelliousness and idolatry of the Israelites during that time, there are lessons we can draw from it today. It reminds us of the consequences of our actions and the importance of not repeating the mistakes of previous generations. It also serves as a warning against engaging in idolatry or blasphemy, urging us to remain faithful to God and worship Him alone.
