Isaiah 66:24

Listen to this article

“And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.”

Isaiah 66:24 concludes the book of Isaiah with a powerful description of the ultimate fate of those who have transgressed against God. This verse depicts a scene of judgment and punishment for those who have rebelled against God and rejected His ways.

The imagery used in this verse speaks of the everlasting consequences that await those who persist in their disobedience and rebellion. Let’s break it down:

“And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcasses of the men that have transgressed against me.” This phrase suggests that the righteous will witness the aftermath of God’s judgment upon the wicked. The term “carcasses” refers to the lifeless bodies of those who have opposed God.

“For their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched.” This phrase emphasizes the eternal nature of the punishment. The imagery of the undying worm and unquenchable fire signifies the perpetual torment and suffering that awaits the unrepentant sinners.

“And they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.” This phrase indicates that the sight of the punishment of those who have rebelled against God will be repulsive and detestable to all living beings. It portrays the righteous response of disgust and horror at the consequences of rejecting God’s ways.

It’s important to interpret this verse in the context of the entire Bible, which reveals God’s justice and mercy. While this verse emphasizes the consequences of unrepentant sin, it’s crucial to remember that God is also loving, forgiving, and desires reconciliation with humanity. The ultimate message of the Bible is one of redemption through faith in Jesus Christ, who offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who believe in Him.
