Isaiah 8:2

Posted on 18 May at 15:07
Listen to this article

“And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.”

Isaiah 8:2 (KJV):

“And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.”

Context:Before analysing the specific verse, it’s important to understand the context of Isaiah 8. The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament and is attributed to the prophet Isaiah. In chapter 8, Isaiah is delivering a message from God to the people of Judah regarding impending judgement and the importance of trusting in God’s promises.

Faithful Witnesses:In Isaiah 8:2, the prophet Isaiah mentions that he took “faithful witnesses” to record something. These witnesses are Uriah the priest and Zechariah, the son of Jeberechiah. The purpose of these witnesses is to testify to the truth of the message Isaiah is delivering.

Uriah the Priest:The identity of Uriah the priest mentioned in this verse is uncertain, as the Bible does not provide much information about him. He is not to be confused with Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba, as mentioned in 2 Samuel 11. The Uriah mentioned in Isaiah 8:2 is likely a different individual.

Zechariah, son of Jeberechiah:Similarly, Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah is not to be confused with the prophet Zechariah who wrote the book of Zechariah. The Zechariah mentioned here is a historical figure who served as a witness alongside Uriah.

Importance of Witnesses:The presence of witnesses in this verse emphasises the seriousness and authenticity of the message being delivered. In ancient times, witnesses played a crucial role in validating the accuracy and reliability of information. By including witnesses, Isaiah provides additional credibility to his prophetic message, indicating that the forthcoming judgement and promises are true and should be taken seriously.

  • Application:While this verse is specific to the context of Isaiah’s prophetic message, it reminds us of the importance of having credible witnesses in various aspects of life. In legal settings, witnesses play a vital role in providing evidence and establishing truth. Likewise, in our personal lives, we should seek reliable witnesses and sources of information to guide our decisions and actions.
