Isaiah 9:13
For the people turneth not vnto him that smiteth them, neither doe they seeke the Lord of hostes. Isaiah 9:13 (KJV)
Isaiah 9:13 is part of a prophecy given by the prophet Isaiah concerning the judgment that would come upon the northern kingdom of Israel and the people of Judah. The prophecy warns about the people’s disobedience and their failure to turn to God despite His correction.
In this verse the phrase “him that smiteth them” refers to God, who was disciplining Israel because of their idolatry and rebellion. God’s intention in allowing affliction was to bring the people to repentance and to turn them back to Himself.
Nevertheless, the people remained stubborn and unrepentant. Their hardened hearts showed a clear disregard for God’s authority, as they did not respond to His discipline or seek a relationship with the Lord.
The clause “neither do they seek the Lord of hosts” emphasizes the need for an active pursuit of God. Seeking the Lord involves recognizing His sovereignty, humbling oneself before Him, desiring a close relationship, and earnestly seeking His guidance, wisdom, and will for one’s life.
Isaiah’s message is relevant today. Believers can become complacent or indifferent, ignoring God’s correction and failing to seek Him. This verse challenges us to examine our own hearts: Are we actively seeking God? Do we respond to His discipline with humility and repentance? Do we prioritize His will and guidance?
True spiritual growth requires an ongoing pursuit of God and a willingness to respond to His correction and leading. Isaiah 9:13 highlights the people’s failure to respond to God’s correction and their lack of seeking Him. It serves as a reminder for us to actively seek the Lord, respond to His discipline, and cultivate a deep and meaningful relationship with Him.
