James 1:23

“For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:”

This verse is part of a larger passage found in James 1:22‑25 that discusses the importance of not only hearing the Word of God but also putting it into practice.

Let’s examine the verse in its context to gain a deeper understanding:

James 1:22‑25 (KJV): “22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”

In this passage, James emphasizes the distinction between two types of individuals: “For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer…” – This phrase highlights the distinction between two types of individuals: those who only listen to the Word and those who also apply it in their lives.

“…he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass.” – James presents an analogy that illustrates how a hearer of the Word looks at themselves in the mirror of God’s Word but then goes away and forgets what they saw. It implies that they fail to take any action or make any changes based on what they heard.

“For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.” – The hearer of the Word looks at themselves in the mirror of God’s Word but then goes away and forgets what they saw. It implies that they fail to take any action or make any changes based on what they heard.

“But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein…” – In contrast, this passage explains that the person who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues therein, being not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, will be blessed.

“…he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” – The hearer who becomes a doer of the work is promised blessing.
